SUPPORT
RECONSTRUCTING RICHMOND
Reconstructing Richmond is an independent documentary project, and it is only possible because our communities believe in it.
Why give?
-
✽
Filming is happening now, capturing stories and events in and around Richmond as they unfold. Every dollar donated goes into current production and circulates in the communities this film is about.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Our production company, based in Richmond, Virginia, is named for the year the Civil War ended and Reconstruction began. Its co-founders are Patrick Mamou, Director and Producer, and Mike Rabin, Executive Producer.

The traditional paths have narrowed. Federal funding for public media was eliminated in 2025, cutting off the country's largest funder of independent documentary work. Foundation grants are now oversubscribed. On the other end, streaming buyers acquire a fraction of the documentaries they once did, and they buy finished films rather than works in progress.
That's why we're asking the people who believe in this project to fund it directly.

Not at this time. Donations go directly to 1865 Media LLC, a for-profit production company, so they are not deductible as charitable gifts. We have a fiscal sponsorship application in progress. If approved, we will offer a second option where gifts would be deductible. Email us at [address] and we will notify you when that opens. Gifts made now cannot be converted later.

At this time we are not soliciting investors. Remaining independent keeps the film accountable to the communities in it rather than to outside financial interests. If you would like to be considered for future opportunities, email us at info@reconstructingrichmond.com.
